I'm embracing all things natural for my Christmas decorations this year and I'm calling it my "Woodland Christmas". I got the idea for my moss wreath when I was out and about driving down our country roads and I spied a whole bunch of it growing in a north-facing ditch. I screeched to a halt (well, not really), I pulled over to the side of the road, donned my garden gloves (which I have with me at all times) and started to carefully pull some of it up - it literally came up in sheets! It only took me a few minutes to fill a garbage bag full of it and off I went. What a score! When I got home I searched around my yard for things to use as accents. I found some fungi (baby robustus conk, I think), dried rose hips, lichen-covered twigs, and pine cones. I had a grapevine and wire garland (from my autumn banister) and I knew it was the perfect thing to secure the moss. I then tied a little gold-edged burlap bow at the top, slightly off-centre. The final touch was a cute little bird that I already had.
I layered the fungi to reflect how they actually grow in the wild |
my sweet little bird |
gold-edged burlap bow and rose hips |
my grapevine mesh wrapped around the whole wreath - perfect match! |
a little snow - the real stuff! |
yep, it's real all right |
carrying on the moss theme in my birch pots |
I would only use this wreath outside - it's very rustic |
Welcome |
a day later after our first big snowfall |
brrrrr! close the door! |
Here's a tiny little how-to for creating the moss wreath:
I used a grapevine wreath |
and secured the moss with florists wire - be careful not to pack the moss too hard - it crushes easily |

I love anything with moss. when I was a little girl is was one of the first green, living things that caught my eye and fascinated me. It grows in secret spots, and that makes it truly special. your wreath is heartwarming and a lovely greeting to those that knock on your door. I would have to stand and stare at it for a long while before knocking! happy week to you Barb.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty Barb. Love the little bird! :)

I agree with Sharon, this is the most beautiful wreath I have seen this year! If it was not freezing and pouring down rain, I would be out right now gathering moss for my very own wreath!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this wreath! And how creative, I would have been at the craft store buying moss in a bag, lol. Now I know to go out and look for it.
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely the prettiest I have seen today and all free. I have used moss from my yard for a pheasant and twig floral piece (a couple of years ago) and the moss is still just fine. Your wreath and front porch will be perfect all winter long. Thank you for sharing. xo Lynn@thevintagenest

Your wreath is beautiful!!! I have been making moss wreaths, and wonder how long yours stayed bright green? Some types of moss turn brown after a couple of weeks with regular watering and misting?
ReplyDeletePlease help?
Thanks,
Sarah
