. . . so ephemeral that they appear, liquefy, and turn into black goo within a matter of hours . . .
actually kind of pretty |
they were everywhere |

the characteristic shaggy mane in the mushroom's early stages |
These mushrooms were sprouting all over our yard and what a mess! They would emerge and very quickly (within a day) dissolve into black pools on the lawn. Yes, I did find them fascinating but cleaning them up before cutting the lawn was a bit, umm, challenging . . .
Here is some info from Michael Kuo at the mushroomexpert
I've never seen anything like these before. I hope they didn't smell as "interesting" as they look......
ReplyDeleteWow, they made for some beautiful photos. It's a shame they have to end up as black goo.
ReplyDeleteMuy buenas las imagenes,

ReplyDeleteI have to do that every autumn, our yard will be full off mushrooms, I hate cleaning up it:)
ReplyDeleteFabulous photos - our fruiting season for mushrooms and fungi is in October and I can't wait to find some good ones. I've never seen any turn to goo before but you've captured that phase so well.
ReplyDeleteHow fascinating... and very messy! But you really did take lovely photos of them! =)
ReplyDeleteLovely macro images ~ so interesting!

lovely images! :)
ReplyDeleteI love your captures of these most interesting mushrooms. The macros are spectacular. I can't say I have ever seen these, we just get the little white ones in our yard. The "melting" ones remind me of a Tim Burton movie....creepy!!
ReplyDeleteThese are amazing, Barb. We never get anything like this here. I can imagine they are a pain to clean up, but what fantastic photos! :)
ReplyDeleteSo weird! But pretty at the same time! Very nice shots!

Since those Ink Cup mushrooms are making a mess of your lawn, why not bring them to the kitchen? Ink Cup mushrooms are an edible type of mushroom. But they do have to be cooked right away after picking because they turn black quickly. Be mindful not to take alcohol after eating this because it can cause a bad reaction inside the body.
