At the beginning of each season I like to create a wreath from things that I've gathered while out and about in the countryside. So, out I went looking for something that would epitomize autumn and what better material could I choose than some kind of grain, since we are surrounded by farmland. Yes, I may have strayed from the ditch to the edge of a farmers field of oats . . . hmmmm . . . I hope they don't notice when it comes time to count the grains after harvest . . .

wrapping - no glue used |
Start with a straw based wreath. Take small batches of oats (cut stems short) and wrap with twine, heavy thread or as I used, floss! As you add each batch it covers up the first one. I wrapped my wreath twice - here you can see that the whole wreath is covered but I'm starting a new layer.
|
create sprays for the bottom of the wreath |
Create two (or more) sprays by laying a bunch of oats opposite each other and securing with floral wire.
Us a floral pick to anchor it to the wreath.
Wrap wire around the sprays and the wreath.
Tie with some kind of bow - I used a simple rustic piece of burlap and voila! you have your wreath. The wonderful thing is that it doesn't have to be perfect - it's a rustic country wreath, after all.

Beautiful job. How many more are you willing to make?
What a great idea!! We've had to duck in fields of Sunflowers while in ND before, so I know what you are saying about duck and cover ;-). I'm thinking about poking my hydrangea blooms into a wreath this year...if I just have the patience.

Gorgeous -- the light wreath against the dark door is pure perfection. And you can feed the wreath to horses afterwards to get rid of the evidence. :)
